THE BOY SCOUT: If you want to add volume to sloping shoulders (or cover up bare ones, handily turning a sundress into an office-approved ensemble), fold a larger (around thirty-one inches square) scarf into a triangle; then drape it around your neck so the triangle is hanging down your back. Tie the ends loosely around your neck, letting it fall gracefully around your shoulders.

THE BEADED NECKLACE: There’s no need to fold or roll your scarf before you start this one: just take a large, thirty-one-inch scarf (the thinner the better), and tie a neat, yet not too-tight knot right in the middle. Then, tie another knot every two inches or so on either side of your initial knot, working your way out to the ends of the scarf. Once you’re done, tie the ends together to form a circle big enough to pull over your head.

This will create a lovely beaded effect, which is perfect if you love the look of a necklace but hate the weight and feel of an actual necklace bearing down on your neck and getting tangled up in your hair. Having a scarf stored right around your neck will also come in handy if you suddenly want to put your hair up or cover your face from an onslaught of dust at a music festival. I fervently wish I’d had a clever scarf necklace around my neck when I accidentally laid my head down in a plate of olive oil at an Italian restaurant one New Year’s Eve while trying to make my dining partners laugh. I could easily have tied up my oil-soaked bangs in a neat bow if I’d had a handy scarf on—instead, I counted down the seconds and rang in the new year with my dripping-wet bangs plastered to the side of my face.

THE POUF: If you fall in love with a scarf design but find that it is way too small to tie up properly, use it as a pocket square instead. Simply grab the scarf directly in the center and bunch the fabric into a tidy pouf. You can then tuck it into your blazer pocket either pouf up or tails up—your call.
